How to Use Precedent Documents

A precedent is a previously translated source/target document pair that is used to guide the translation of a new document. It differs from a reference document, which may include glossaries, style guides, or contextual background, but not aligned source-target content.

Precedents provide direct examples of how similar content was translated, and the system uses this to improve consistency and speed for your current translation.


What happens when you use a precedent?

When you upload a precedent document, the system compares your current source document with the precedent’s source. If there are exact or near-exact matches, it will reuse the translation from the precedent for those segments. These reused translations will appear in your output, helping ensure consistency and reducing manual work.

Only content with strong alignment is reused. You can review and edit these matches in the output preview.

 

1. Click on Translate, then click on Document.

2. Select or drag and drop a file.

3. Once your Document has been uploaded, click on Next.

4. Select the language direction and click on + to add the Precedent documents.

5. Upload your source and target Precedent Documents.

6. Once your Document has been uploaded, click on Add Precedent Documents, then click on Next.

Use previously translated source/target document pairs (precedents) to reuse existing translations to match content in this document. This ensures greater consistency in phrasing and terminology, and only affects this translation.


7. Click on Translate to start the translation
